Former Wallabies coach Eddie Jones disagrees with John Connolly
Jones, who coached the Wallabies from 200105 and now holds the clipboard for the Japanese team, said Folau had all the necessary skills to become a dual international after playing for the Kangaroos.
If he does make the switch, as expected, he would join a list of former highprofile NRL stars who made a successful switch to rugby, including Wendell Sailor, Mat Rogers and Lote Tuqiri.
"He'll be a good player because, geez, he can play the game," Jones said. "He's got athletic ability, he can run, he can contest the ball in the air and he's still young. He's only 23. You run the line through the Lote Tuqiris, your Wendells and your Mat Rogers and they all went (across to union) five years later than he will.
"Any guy that can play league at the top level he's played is going to be successful and with the amount of ability he's got he's going to be an outstanding success.
"He'll be a Wallaby within 12 months, if not less. He's top range."
However, Connolly said there were intrinsic differences between the codes, and questioned if Folau could master them.
"Folau is a good physical player, but would he be able to adapt to rugby and the challenge of coping with that?" Connolly said.
"The transition is not always that easy. He would have to be ready for it mentally. That could be his biggest challenge.
"Mentally, he would have to be up for the change and starting from scratch in many respects.
"The lack of space is something you really have to get used to. And where are you going to play him?
"It would have to be at 13, I think, louis vuitton paris, or on the wing. You could not play him any closer than that.
"The breakdown is of course something else he would have to get his head around.
"If Folau is coming from no background at all he could really struggle."
Regardless of whether he is a success or not, former Parramatta and Australia star Brett Kenny said Folau's latest defection should be enough to ensure the code has nothing to do with him again.
The Eels played a crucial role in helping Folau gain an early release from his AFL contract with the GWS Giants. But he spurned the club, telling the Eels on Friday he intended to play rugby.
Parramatta was believed to have made a $3 million offer over four years, compared with the $1maseason deal he will get from the rival code. The situation wasn't helped when the NRL intervened to block the deal as it would breach salary cap rules, although that impediment was removed last week.
