Winter on Collins
It's an odd time of year on Collins Street's Parisien end where freezing winds whip and shivver through the plane trees spidery twigs, and Melbourne's chicest dash in black from sale to sale.
The signs of a seasons end were discreetly propped in the window displays several weeks ago. In another week or so, they will be removed with the racked dregs of this seasons unsold onsale stock. Out with the old and here's an ironic twist for you for some boutiques at least, it's in with the new autumn/winter 2003/04 fashions.
Surprised winter fashion will actually arrive in winter? You're not Robinson Crusoe. While the rest of Melbourne is flogging off winter stock and clearing the way for summer to arrive midwinter (that's fashion), there are Collins Street boutiques all in a tizz, unpacking winter fashions ACTUALLY IN WINTER.
Fashion's habit of biting its own toenails delivering new season stock sometimes four months before the actual, climactic season for which it was designed is a tradition so rocksolid and innately stupid that industry commentators despaired and gave up whinging about it years ago.
Now this. Many of Collins Streets international boutiques: Salvatore Ferragamo, Gucci, Chanel, and Louis Vuitton, among them, have deliveries of new stock synchronised with their counterparts north of the equator. Autumn/winter 2003/04 is already dribbling into US/Euro stores midsummer and for the next two to three months.
This means that in Australia, winter stock arrives in winter; summer in summer. Admittedly, a decade or so ago, before designers focussed more on lightness and layering and 'transeasonal' or 'non seasonal' designs rather than warmforwinter, coolforsummer fashions, this would be far more significant. Nevertheless, is still significant to Melbournes cashedup classes who can wear their heavierweight new purchases first.
Taking advantage of this odd time of year on Collins, of course, moncler pas cher, will cost you designer frocks and small family sedans can be in roughly the same price realm. Pop $5000 at least into your purse, or be resigned to windowshop on Collins.
